    Code of Regulations

§15307.1. Quality-Assurance Review for Labeling Cannabinoids and Terpenoids.
    (a) For purposes of this division, any one cannabinoid, THC, Total THC, CBD and/or Total CBD claimed to be present on a label shall not be considered inaccurate if the difference in percentage on the certificate of analysis is plus or minus 10.0%. (b) For purposes of this division, the terpenoid testing results on the label of any one terpenoid claimed to be present shall not be considered inaccurate if the difference in percentage on the certificate of analysis is plus or minus 10.0%. (c) For purposes of this section, the difference in percent shall be calculated using the following equation: Difference in percent = │(laboratory measurement – label claim) │/ (label claim) x 100% (d) For purposes of this section, Total THC and Total CBD shall have the same meaning as defined in chapter 6.

    (e) Cannabis goods shall be labeled with accurate concentration limits in accordance with sections 17304 and 17407.

  • WHAT IS THE EXTRACTION PROCESS?

    OILS

    Step one: Primary Extraction
Separation of cannabis plant matter from its resinous trichomes using a closed-loop system

    Step 2: Winterization and Filtration
    - A cold-temperature based process that removes unwanted compounds such as fats, chlorophyll and waxes
    - Winterization is completed when ethanol is added to the crude oil and stored at freezing temperatures for up to 24 hours.
    - This winterization allows for unwanted compounds to coagulate so they can then be filtered out.
    - Once unwanted compounds have coagulated a filter press is used to separate lipids and waxes from the desirable portion of the extract (miscella) and ethanol is removed.

    Step 3: Decarboxylation
    - The process of converting CBDa and THCa to their neutral active forms CBD and THC.
    - This is achieved by applying heat under vacuum to the miscella, which allows for the release of carbon dioxide.

    Step 4: Distillation
    - At this point fats and waxes have been removed, CBD and THC have been activated and residual solvents have been removed from the miscella.
    - Miscella is loaded and boiled at specific boiling temperatures to turn into vapor which will then pass through a chilled condensing head reverting the vapor back to liquid form.
    - This heating and cooling process allows for the crude to be separated into heads, tails and main body.  The main body contains your purified and concentrated distillate.
    - Processors can use a short path or wiped film distillation system to complete this process

    CRYO TERPS

    - Terpenes are volatile and aromatic compounds responsible for giving Cannabis strains their unique scent profiles
    - Cryo cure brings down the moisture levels in cannabis to its ideal level thus preserving the trichomes that would normally break off during the drying process.
    - Because terpenes are sensitive to light and heat, this cryo cure method allows for the preservation of the natural terpenes.

    BOTANICAL vs CANNABIS TERPS

    - Botanically derived terpenes are naturally occurring compounds found in a variety of plants whereas Cannabis terpenes retain the original terpenes found in the cannabis plant leading to a more true-to-nature aroma and flavor.
    - The extraction process for Cannabis terpenes is more expensive and complex compared to the extraction process for Botanical terpenes.
    - Botanical terpenes are more readily available due to their ability to be extraction from multiple plant sources
